Lecture Topics

A DIRECT TECHNIQUE FOR OCCLUSAL GUARD FABRICATION - A “hands-on” Course for Dentists and Dental Assistants

Today’s cosmetic-oriented dental practice requires the dentist to be proficient in all types of ceramic restorations. After the ceramics are delivered and the occlusion is perfected, one more important step remains. A well constructed night guard that is easily accepted by the patient is mandatory for the average all-ceramic case to last long term. This presentation will provide the details of a direct technique used to fabricate comfortable and long-lasting night guards for porcelain veneer and complex full-arch cases. Participants will be provided all materials for direct fabrication of night guards using a new system from Dentsply called Interra.

After completing this course the participants will learn:

  • A technique for direct fabrication of a rigid, great fitting night guard.
  • How to adjust the occlusion on the night guard quickly and ideally.
  • Steps for finishing and polishing so the guard will be comfortable and long-lasting.

ADVANCED PROVISIONAL FABRICATION - A “hands-on” Course for Dentists, Dental Assistants, and Lab Technicians

High quality provisional restorations are essential in a dental practice dedicated to comprehensive restorative dentistry. Cosmetic reconstruction is much more predictable when using superbly made provisionals to serve as a blueprint for the final restoration. This presentation will provide the details of an indirect technique used to fabricate multilayered composite provisional restorations for porcelain veneers and complex full-arch cases. Participants will be provided all materials for indirect fabrication of provisional restorations using a new system from Dentsply called Radica.

After completing this course the participants will learn:

  • Principles of smile design to be used to develop an ideal diagnostic wax-up.
  • How to transfer the information in the diagnostic wax-up into a completed provisional that rivals the final restoration.
  • Step-by-step hands-on instruction for the provisional technique (all equipment and materials provided)

FUNCTIONAL ESTHETICS: Predictable Techniques for a Complete Ceramic Rehabilitation

Half Day Program

There are many factors to consider when planning a full mouth reconstruction. This presentation will illustrate systems used by Dr. Malone to accomplish consistent, predicable results, both esthetically and functionally.

After completion of this course the participant will be able to:

  • Complete the preparation phase faster and with more control

HOW TO USE DIGITAL IMAGING TO IMPROVE YOUR CASE ACCEPTANCE

Digital imaging using digital cameras, intraoral cameras, digital radiography and dental computerized imaging can have a dramatic effect on the way dentists communicate with their patients. Systems for taking digital images and software to show those images effectively can make the difference between a patient accepting treatment you know they need and them walking out the door.

This half day program will demonstrate:

  • How to use photography and radiographs to develop a slide show to get your patients to accept your treatment plans.
  • How to use your before and after images to create a professional album for your office.
  • Systems you can use to get your patients to accept the treatment you know they need.

HOW TO ACHIEVE PREDICTABLE EXCELLENCE IN COSMETIC DENTISTRY

Dr. Mike Malone has combined the occlusion and restorative teachings of L D Pankey, Alvin Filastre, Pete Dawson, etc., with a passion for learning from the best and brightest in cosmetic dentistry. He has developed systems for combining predictable restorative techniques with ideal cosmetic procedures. This full day lecture will highlight the systems he uses to achieve predictable excellence in cosmetic restorative procedures in his practice in Lafayette, Louisiana.

GETTING YOUR PATIENTS TO SAY YES TO COSMETIC AND RESTORATIVE DENTISTRY

This seminar will highlight those key areas that guided Dr. Malone in developing a highly successful cosmetic-oriented, fee-for-service practice in a blue-collar, middle-class community. He will discuss techniques he uses to get most patients to schedule, to look forward to, and to rave about their comprehensive new patient examination. He will go over his step-by-step process (utilizing advanced digital photography and presentations) for achieving predictable case acceptance for optimum dentistry. He will also present his Dental Health Program, a preventive periodontal program that produces predictable results in any size practice. (Part of full day or a 3 hour separate presentation)

Learning objectives:

  • Comprehensive examination protocol
  • Achieving predictable case acceptance at any level
  • Using a periodontal program to initiate patient care

PREDICTABLE COSMETIC AND RESTORATIVE DENTISTRY

Dentists often find that crown and bridge insertion appointments turn into “try-in” appointments. When the margin is open, the occlusion is high, or the bridge will not seat, who is responsible, the dentist or the technician? With the growing popularity of all ceramic veneers, crowns and bridges, predictability becomes even more important. This presentation will review techniques designed to reduce the stress of cosmetic and restorative dentistry in a general or prosthodontic practice. (Part of full day or 3 hour separate presentation)

After completion of this course the participant will be able to:

  • Complete the preparation phase faster and with more control
  • Manage soft tissue and take ideal impressions every time
  • Complete and seat finished restorations with predictability

In South Louisiana we have been very blessed to have been influenced by LD Pankey's closest friend, Harold Wirth. Harold spent his retirement years at LSU sharing a lot about care for the patient above all things, excellence, positive thinking and enthusiasm. I cannot think of a time that Harold's message is more significant in our profession. It was always the patient first and the rest would follow.

Harold's seed bore great fruit. Our present Dean Henry Gremillion was my classmate. He was head of the Parker Mahan clinic in Florida before coming back home to LSU. ALthough now in academics and spending much of his career in occlusion related issues, Henry was a terrific general practitioner in his early years and brings to the students a tremendous insight into care of the patient that he took from Harold and LD.

Others that began their journey at LSU and I feel were strongly affected by Harold's wisdom were Corky Whilhite, Gerald Chiche, Jerome Smith and MIke Bellerino, all deservedly gaining just fame nationally and internationally. But amongst that group can be counted Dr Mike Malone. Mike graduated a year ahead of me so I can truthfully say he has always been ahead of me. Mike practices a stones throw away from me so I am aware of not only what he speaks but does. He has always in his practice sought and delivered the very highest care and dentistry and is a walking encyclopedia of dental information. He has unbelievable energy in his pursuit and does complete rehab with superb occlusal schemes working with his technician, Mike Bellerino who like Mike is AACD accredited and a tremendous tribute to the profession. Mike is a key part at LSU of the committee that overseas a vibrant CE program and was very involved in the Cosmetic Continuum that was successful at the school for many years. In short MIke is a great citizen.

I believe dentistry in south Louisiana has tremendously benefited from his contributions.

Regards
Bruce LeBlanc DDS
